Get to Know by Kandy Metro

Project “Get to know by Kandy Metro” was an initiative by the club in order to bridge the gap between the existing members and the new members. The project being under the club service avenue, didn’t alone focus on the members bonding, it was also a project to ensure the new members are introduced and made familiar to the avenues we mainly focus in the Rotaract movement. The project consisted of a treasure hunt which was organized within Kandy city limits. The treasure hunt started off with sorting the unjumble letters to find a location in Kandy city where the teams had to proceed with a clean up and had to also feed the street dogs.

This part was mainly focusing on the community service avenue, covering the sub-area environment and animal welfare. The teams then proceeded to finding the Rotaract/ Rotary logo around Kandy, where they were successfully able to find garbage trolleys and sinks which has been donated by Rotaract and Rotary clubs. This provided a better image of the Rotaract movement to the newly joint members and they were able to understand the role Rotaract plays generally to help the community in general. Further, the teams were then asked to visit the 4 religious worship places which the teams were able to successfully complete. As Rotaractors we should at all times promote that we as humans need to respect each and every person and religion as a practice.

As a community-based club, we see that its very important that we mold our new members to this kind of atmosphere as its an ethical practice to do so. The teams were then asked to do a blog to promote the city of Kandy. This gave them the opportunity to bring out their creative ideas and bond well as a team. This was mainly done to create a better bond in between the members. The teams then proceeded to solve a few math and logical questions to find GPS Coordinates to reach to their next location. This activity was mainly done to build a skill of math and logical thinking within the club members, promoting the professional development avenue.

As the teams arrived at their destination, nearly some ending up with GPS coordinates in Ghana & the Indian ocean the teams were finally able to reach to their destination where they were given to act out problems commonly faced by the youth in Sri Lanka. The teams had to make up their own little drama of 5 minutes according to the problem described. Along with this, they were advised to write up a sustainable solution on how we can contribute to lessen these issues the youth faces.

This gave the opportunity for the new members to learn how to come up with sustainable project ideas and present them which also gave them an exposure to the Avenues of Service & the Rotary Areas of Focus. Finally, to end the day with we had the groups introducing and dancing to various types of dance and music. This promoted the avenue of recreational activities. There were 3 teams’ of 5/6 members, where team “Southside Serpents’ were able to secure the champions title of the treasure hunt, whilst team “Protractors” secured 1st runners up and team “A Team” secured the 2nd runners up. The event ended with certificates been awarded to the winners and participants of the teams.
